2006 Canada Fishing Trip

Wrap-up

Trip Summary

The 2006 trip was another success.  This year was second only to last year in terms of keepers. We had a 320 keepers, compared with 389 keepers last year.  The big bass was caught by Bob McGinnis and weighed in at 4 lbs 4 oz.  The big pike was caught by Don Durbeck and was 29” long.

The weather Thursday was rainy and proved to be the best day of fishing.  Friday was overcast but still pretty good fishing. The Friday lunch gathering on Rosal Island saw another great turnout.  Everyone enjoyed the catch of the day and a floor show provided by Bobby Gephart.  You gotta’ love that guy.  Not many people are man enough to pull that one off.  Saturday turned out to be a beautiful warm day.

We’re happy to say the Club did not have to award the second annual Ontario Outlaw Award this year.

The bus ride home provided more excitement than we really needed.  Seems the brackets holding the top of the front bumper on the bus broke loose as we’re cruising along in the passing lane.  Fortunately, the bumper is hinged on the bottom so it didn’t completely come off.  Instead, we pushed the bumper along as a snowplow until our driver could calmly slow the bus down and get it over to the shoulder.  That’s when the Navy came to the rescue.  Rick Gephart and Jim Laudermilch used their nautical skills and some strong nylon rope to tie the bumper back up and allow us to make it back to town.  Kudos to Rick, Jim and our driver.  Thanks guys.

Financial Results

There were 36 fishermen on the trip this year.  We were without several of the “regulars” this year including Ken Wolfe and Dave Bryan who were not able to go for health reasons.  We hope they’re able to join us again next year.  We’re very confident that next year’s number will be a bit higher, possibly even up to 45.

The total cost of the trip this year was $14,991 which worked out to $428.32 per man.  As we increase the number of fishermen on the trip, we can reduce the cost per man by spreading out the fixed costs over a larger number of people.

Active & Standby Lists

A copy of the revised Active and Standby lists is enclosed. They have been revised to reflect changes for those on last year’s Active list that didn’t attend this year and either didn’t pay their dues or chose not to leave them with the club. In accordance with the Club Bylaws, those folks were moved to the bottom of the Standby list.

If you’re on the Standby List, please send us an email and let us know if you would be available to attend the 2007 trip.  You can notify Russ Faber at rafaber1@comcast.net.

2007 Trip Dates

The dates for the 2007 trip have been set for departure on Wednesday, September 12, 2007 and returning Sunday, September 16, 2007.

Dues Amount

Tentatively, the dues are still $450 per man. The Executive Committee will review this after we receive our estimates for lodging and transportation in the early part of next year.

Other Items of Interest

Passport or ID:  The 2007 trip is the last year you will able cross the border with a driver’s license and birth certificate.  With that in mind, we recommend you get your passport this year to avoid the rush.   Our Website has a link to get directions on how to obtain a passport.

Boat Rental:  For those that want to rent a pontoon or other type of boat next year, don’t forget to make your arrangements early by calling Stirling Lodge. Their information is also on our Website.

Photos:  If you have photos from the 2006 trip to add to the web site, please email them as soon as possible to Mike McGinnis at mcginnis@pa.net

Final Note

For those of you who have not yet ventured to our new web page, we encourage you to take a look at it. The address is on the letterhead.  We would like to say a special thanks to Mike McGinnis for all his efforts in creating the page.  Thanks Mike.  Great Job!

Payment of Dues

Total Dues: $450       Due by February 1, 2007: $200           Remainder due by July 1, 2007

At the annual meeting, the Club adopted a change to the Bylaws to encourage timely payment of dues.  The change should encourage Active Members to pay their dues for the upcoming trip in a timely manner.  The Club feels this will help the Executive Committee better plan the trip, fill open slots, maximize attendance and keep down the cost per man.

Penalty:  A penalty of 10% of the balance due will be assessed if not paid by due date.  Any Active Member who fails to pay the full amount, including any penalty by July 1, will be dropped to the bottom of the Standby List.  As a reminder, any fully paid member who has to cancel but who leaves his money in the Club, will remain on the Active List for the following year's trip.

Payment should be made to:

Dennis Gaughan, Treasurer at 981 Timber Lane, Middletown, PA 17057-3187

The Board wishes you have a happy and safe holiday season.
