2007 Canada Fishing Trip

Wrap-up

Trip Summary

The 2007 trip was our biggest group ever.  Forty fishermen descended on the lakes at Newboro. It also produced our largest number of keepers at 400, an average of 10 per man.  For the second year in a row, Bob McGinnis caught the big bass.  This year’s weighed in at 5 lbs 4 oz.  Does he know something the rest of us don’t?  Bill Davies snuck in the end of the last day to take the big pike at 29” long.

The weather Thursday was warm and sunny.  Friday started out sunny, warm, and a light breeze. The Friday lunch gathering on Rosal Island saw another great turnout.  Special thanks to those who worked so hard on putting it together.  While the temperature remained warm, the afternoon brought winds the likes of which we’ve never seen in Canada.  Wind speed was estimated at 40 to 50 mph producing waves of 2 to 3 feet.  Dudley said he’d never seen waves like that on the lake.  Saturday turned much colder with intermittent rain and a couple beautiful, full rainbows in the late afternoon.

The bus ride home was much more subdued than last year.  We arrived back to town by 3:30.

Financial Results

With 40 fishermen along, we had our biggest crowd in Club history. We did miss a couple of our “regulars” this year including Ken Wolfe and Dave Bryan.  We hope they’re able to join us again next year. We’re very confident that next year’s number will be a bit higher.

The total cost of the trip this year was $17,353 which worked out to $444.50 per man.  As we increase the number of fishermen on the trip, we can reduce the cost per man by spreading out the fixed costs over a larger number of people.

Active & Standby Lists

They have been revised to reflect changes for those on last year’s Active list that didn’t attend this year and either didn’t pay their dues or chose not to leave them with the club. In accordance with the Club Bylaws, those folks were moved to the bottom of the Standby list.

If you’re an Active Member and you won’t be able to attend the 2008 trip, please let us know as soon as you can.  And if you’re a Standby Member and already have a sense as to whether or not you will be able to go on the 2008 trip, please let us know.  Please send an email to Russ Faber at rafaber1@comcast.net or call him at (717) 230-9398.   This will be a big help in early planning for the trip.

If you’re on the Standby List, please send us an email and let us know if you would be available to attend the 2008 trip.  You can notify Russ Faber at rafaber1@comcast.net.

2008 Trip Dates

The dates for the 2008 trip have been set for departure on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 and returning Sunday, September 14, 2008.

Dues Amount

Tentatively, the dues are still $450 per man. The Executive Committee will review this after we receive our estimates for lodging and transportation in the early part of next year.

Passport Only for 2008:

Everyone going on the 2008 trip must have a valid passport to get through customs.  A birth certificate and license is not longer acceptable.  If you don’t have a passport, we strongly recommend you apply for one soon.  Our Website has a link to get directions on how to obtain a passport.

Other Items of Interest

Boat Rental:  For those that want to rent a pontoon or other type of boat next year, don’t forget to make your arrangements early by calling Stirling Lodge. Their information is also on our Website.

Photos:  If you have photos from the 2007 trip to add to the web site, please email them as soon as possible to Mike McGinnis at mcginnis@pa.net

Final Note

For those of you who have not yet ventured to our new web page, we encourage you to take a look at it. The address is on the letterhead.  Special thanks go to Mike McGinnis and Joe Hamm for all their efforts in creating and maintaining the page.  Thanks, guys.  A Great Job!

Payment of Dues

Total Dues: $450       Due by February 1, 2008: $200           Remainder due by July 1, 2008

At the annual meeting, the Club adopted a change to the Bylaws to encourage timely payment of dues.  The change should encourage Active Members to pay their dues for the upcoming trip in a timely manner.  The Club feels this will help the Executive Committee better plan the trip, fill open slots, maximize attendance and keep down the cost per man.

Penalty:  A penalty of 10% of the balance due will be assessed if not paid by due date.  Any Active Member who fails to pay the full amount, including any penalty by July 1, will be dropped to the bottom of the Standby List.  As a reminder, any fully paid member who has to cancel but who leaves his money in the Club, will remain on the Active List for the following year's trip.

Payment should be made to:

Dennis Gaughan, Treasurer at 981 Timber Lane, Middletown, PA 17057-3187

The Board wishes you have a happy and safe holiday season.
